Mona Yamazaki Sangesland
Jamaica Plain, MA
Mona first stumbled upon a BollyX class in 2015 and loved it so much that she became a certified BollyX instructor the following year!
As a Pacific Northwest native, Mona is an avid hiker, camper, and all-around explorer of the outdoors. Her passion for health and fitness extended to other areas; she trained in Tae Kwon Do for eight years and received her Kukkiwon 1st Dan (black belt) in 2010. She also has moderate training in Aikido, Brazilian Jiujitsu, and Krav Maga. After focusing her efforts on becoming a professional musician, Mona was introduced to Hindustani and Carnatic music by an ethnomusicologist. This sparked an interest in Indian styles of music, which generated a curiosity in Bollywood, dancing, and BollyX. For 2 years, Mona performed with MIT MIRCHI, MIT's competitive Bollywood- fusion dance team. She enjoys tango and salsa, is an active swimmer and yoga practitioner, and regularly continues to explore other fitness areas.
Mona has music performance, education, and Japanese degrees (and minors) from the University of Washington and New England Conservatory. She spent 2018 - 2019 as a Fulbright Scholar in Helsinki, Finland, where she researched repetitive stress injuries on musicians and ways to alleviate this ever-growing problem. Mona is currently training to become a teacher of the Alexander Technique, a technique used to alter the postural behavior of individuals, leading people to use their bodies more ergonomically, thus allowing them to live happier, healthier, and pain-free lives. She spends much of her day teaching music and Japanese and practicing new dance moves.
She is happy to be leading classes at VIM Central Square and the Huntington Avenue YMCA in Boston, the gym where she was first introduced to BollyX!
