Joyce Barnes
Tahlequah, OK
Born in Colorado and raised in Seattle, the outdoors and travel were some of my most memorable experiences.
With severe asthma and a weak immune system, as a 6-year-old, we moved to Washington state for an environmental change. I played clarinet and baritone saxophone to strengthen my lungs. I also joined the gymnastics and dance teams.
In 1898 I received a Bachelor's degree from Eastern Washington University in music and a Master's in Music Composition in 2003 from Central Washington University.
In 2003, I moved to Washington D.C. to study the Native American Flute collection at Smithsonian's Natural History Museum. In 2004, I moved to Oklahoma where I began creating 500+ wood and river cane flutes while participating in Native American Flute circles and festivals. Because of the dust my allergies and sensitivities returned and inspired me to look for new avenues to improve my declining health. A friend invited me to my first Zumba® class in 2009 and I became a licensed Zumba® instructor in 2011.
Many years ago, I studied the music of India and fell in love with it. In 2014 I discovered Bollywood films was hooked seeing over 300+ movies and became a certified BollyX® Instructor in 2015.
It is wonderful seeing students unleash their inner rockstar with amazing choreo that makes you feel like you are in a Bollywood film. As a BollyX Community Mentor, I love coaching newly certified instructors on their BollyX journey and hearing how they inspire their students!
Stay tuned for class updates in the future.
