Joyce Barnes

Tahlequah, OK

Born in Colorado and raised in Seattle, the outdoors and travel were some of my most memorable experiences.

With severe asthma and a weak immune system, as a 6 year old, we moved to Washington state for an environmental change. I learned to play the clarinet to strengthen my lungs and soon I was playing the baritone saxophone. I also joined the gymnastics and dance teams and loved it.

I received a Bachelor's degree in 1998 from Eastern Washington University in music. A Master's in Music Composition in 2003 from Central Washington University performing written works for voice, instrumental and participating in the first-ever use of a Palm Pilot (old school tech) as a musical instrument in 2002.

In 2003, I moved to Washington D.C. (aka, husband got a new job, LOL) where I studied the Native American Flute collection at Smithsonian's Natural History Museum. In 2004, we moved to Oklahoma where I began creating 500+ wood and river cane flutes while participating in Native American Flute circles and festivals. My allergies and sensitivities returned and inspired me to look for new avenues to improve my declining health again. A friend invited me to my first Zumba® class in 2009 and I became a licensed Zumba® instructor in 2011.

Many years ago, I studied the music of India and fell in love with it. In 2014, I discovered Bollywood films and I was hooked!! I became a certified BollyX® Instructor in 2015.

It is wonderful seeing students unleash their inner rockstar with amazing choreo that makes you feel like you are in a Bollywood film. As a BollyX Community Mentor, I love coaching newly certified instructors on their BollyX journey and hearing how they inspire their students!
